Set in the summer of 1987, FELL takes readers to a forgotten Midwestern town, where construction on a waterpark disturbs something lurking in the woods. Fifteen-year-old Sam Ory must uncover the truth before the predator consumes the town. Suddenly, a summer spent cooling off at the waterpark sounds considerably less appealing.
The setting brings a dose of ’80s nostalgia, calling back to summers before smartphones and nights spent watching scary movies on VHS. If your idea of a good time involved browsing the horror aisle at the video store, this one deserves a spot on your reading pile.
Brett’s approach to horror also explores the people facing the nightmare - their fears, buried trauma, and the parts of themselves they struggle to confront. There’s something unsettling in the woods, but plenty to reckon with closer to home.
